Wondering how to maximise space in your small bathroom renovations?
Small bathroom renovations can sometimes seem like an impossible task; especially if your main goal is to create a sense of more space. However, it doesn’t have to be impossible!
At Flat Hill, we love renovating small bathrooms and enjoy the challenge of reconfiguring a space to maximise space; the result is so rewarding. And because we are experienced in renovating bathrooms, we’ve put together some ideas for maximising space for your small bathroom renovation project.
In-Shower Shelving:
A new popular addition to bathroom design is in-shower shelving niches which are great at making the most out of unused space. As the shower shelf is recessed into the wall, you’re not losing any space in your bathroom and it can be used to store products that might otherwise have taken up precious cupboard storage space.
Our team at Flat Hill can work with you to design a shower niche that suits your small bathroom space and compliments the design theme you’re wanting to achieve.
Wall Mounted Towel Racks:
When working with a small bathroom space, mounting storage on walls is going to be your best friend. Instead of purchasing a standing towel rack, why not install a mounted towel rack? This will free up floor space and eliminate the risk of your standing towel rack breaking or falling over. Better yet, you can get fancy and even opt for a heated towel rack to make getting out of your warm shower on cold nights that little bit easier.
White Out:
As we all know, opting for mainly white colours opens any space and creates the illusion of scale. Therefore, when working with a small bathroom, we often recommend that clients choose light, bright tiles, paint and tapware to create a sense of that space they’re physically missing. Our in-house design consultant can help you select light colours that will complement each other and create the feeling of space.
Mirror Image:
Similar to choosing light colours, installing multiple mirrors can also create the illusion of more space than there is. Of course, having multiple mirrors also allows more than one person to get ready at a time which means you don’t have to fight over the space with competing family members.
Take up More Space (huh?):
Believe it or not, sometimes taking up space can actually create more space. Crazy, right? We suggest actually taking up space where you need it most, which is often the vanity area. Stretching out the vanity to the whole width of the bathroom (within reason) gives you more space for storage and shelving. Again, a large vanity makes the bathroom more efficient as multiple people can get ready at once. If your vanity is long enough, you might even be able to install a his and hers sink for you and your partner.
Smooth over Sharp:
Design knowledge says that rounded and curved finishes help create space as opposed to choosing baths, showers, basins and stools with sharp edges. This is for one of two reasons. Firstly, sharp edges are not small space friendly. They increase chances of any middle of the night (or day) bumps and simply give the illusion that space is being ‘’intruded” into. Secondly, design choices such as a curved shower recess can help create depth within the whole room and will ultimately give you more space to enjoy your shower which is all you can ask for, right?
Custom Shelving:
Having a small bathroom, it’s almost essential that you have a custom shelving unit created that is designed to make the most of your specific space. In our small bathroom renovations, we often try to use narrow wall mounted cabinets and storage shelves that stretch all the way to the ceiling. These two solutions are successful in maximising storage without compromising any precious floor space.
