Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
When working on small bathroom renovation projects, small changes can have a big impact on the final outcome. From minor touches like finishing with a smooth versus sharp edge, through to bigger decisions like where to place your storage – every design decision counts when you’re working with limited space.
With a few tricks up our sleeve and the know-how for turning small spaces into open, welcoming spaces, the team from Flat Hill are sharing some ideas to consider for functionality, style, storage and lighting to help your small bathroom leave a big impression.
Less vs More
Less is always more, and if there is one tip to take into your small bathroom renovation, it is that minimalism is key! This small change in opting for less clutter can make a huge impact on your space, making it feel more open, inviting, and clean. Each item should serve a purpose, even if that purpose is to add an element of style to the space! For all our minimalism must-dos, read more about small bathroom renovations here.
Custom-made vs Convenient Storage
It can be hard to choose between convenience or custom-made solutions when it comes to storage, but when working with a small bathroom space in a renovation, it is worth going for the latter. There is always room for storage, but how it looks depends on how smart you design it! You want to maximize your personal bathroom space, which means that the solutions aren’t going to be the same for everybody. A good rule of thumb is to implement floating shelves or hidden cabinets, but if you want more helpful tips, see our blog on how to maximise space in small bathroom renovations.
Light vs Dark Colours
When it comes to choosing the right colour for your walls, appliances, and tiles, we recommend light, natural, and neutral all the way for smaller bathroom spaces. Anything too colourful or dark can overpower the physical space you are working with, whereas making the most out of your whites, beiges, or cream colours can make a room feel more inviting and open. If you are wanting to incorporate colour into your design, our consultants are happy to help you select a statement piece in the perfect tone to compliment your space.
Smooth vs Sharp Edges
It is a miracle what a soft edge can do for a small space. Sharp corners and fixtures highlight the edges of a bathroom very clearly, and have the tendency to close off the room. Opting for rounder, smooth shapes throughout your fixtures, tiles, and shower screens can create an optical illusion of depth, making the space seem much larger than it actually is. Who wouldn’t want that? There are more tips where that came from in our guide to small bathroom renovations!
Artificial or Natural Lighting?
Trick question – the answer is a big yes to both! If there is any room you want good lighting in, it has to be the bathroom. The best ones make the most out of the natural light available to them, and take advantage of artificial light to brighten the space just that bit further. Our top tip is placing LED lights strategically around the vanity and mirror edges to create the illusion of warm and welcoming light. Statement light fixtures hanging from the ceiling are a plus, with mirror placement also playing a key role into how your lights affect the overall aesthetic.
Sliding vs Swinging Doors
Whether it is your glass shower door or the actual entrance to your bathroom, there is no question that the sliding door is a must have for any small space. Swinging doors take up that extra space that you have to account for, meaning you have less room to work with for other important bathroom features.
Having a sliding door eliminates this obstacle, and even adds an element of convenience and seamlessness to your space. Another helpful hack – ditch the division in your shower and opt for a frameless shower screen in your next bathroom renovation. Trust us, it makes all the difference in opening up the space!
Floor vs Wall
Free standing or wall-mounted fixtures? Answer – fill up that wall. You want to clear as much floor space for ease of access as possible, so where you can, add wall-mounted towel racks, taps, vanities, and shelving. A trend that we are currently seeing is an increase in in-wall toilets, which is the ideal solution for small bathroom renovations. See our recent blog for more strategic designs like these that are sure to be popular in 2022.
